The program has been designed to provide a solid foundation in the content and methods of psychology and the unique skills and methods of clinical psychology. Our perspective is to focus upon health broadly defined, with an emphasis upon coping and adaptation, often with conditions that tend to be long term. Frequently the therapeutic goal is optimal adaptation despite disorder or medical impairment. Hence, the educational goal is to integrate the assessment and intervention skills traditionally associated with clinical psychology with rehabilitation psychology’s emphasis on optimizing the adaptation of persons with disabilities and chronic illnesses. Although the program offers the opportunity for strong clinical training, our primary emphasis is on the methods of behavioral science, and the program offers unusually rich opportunities for research and training in behavioral science.
