Research Facilities

School of Science buildingThe Department of Psychology at IUPUI occupies teaching and research facilities (completed in 1993) located on the downtown IUPUI campus. A secure, self-contained area on the third floor (4000 sq. ft.) of the science building is devoted solely to faculty and graduate student basic animal research. There is an additional office/work area on the third floor for the psychobiology program, housing computers, imaging equipment, and desk space. Faculty offices, human research laboratories, and teaching laboratories are separately located on the first floor. The basic animal research area includes five fully-equipped faculty research laboratories of about 400 square feet each, five additional research rooms to be used on a demand basis, a surgical procedures room, animal technician office, animal housing quarters and storage areas. 

All rooms are temperature- and humidity-controlled, and the faculty areas are equipped with gas, compressed air, deionized water, fume hoods, bench space, storage cabinets, chemical storage, surgical lights, and dimmer controls. An additional secure research space (1000 sq. ft.) and offices used by Psychobiology faculty are located in the Biotechnology Research & Training Center.

Equipment Resources

Equipment resources include computer-controlled behavioral apparatus (operant chambers for rats, mice, and pigeons; eyeblink classical conditioning chambers; activity boxes; plus mazes; spatial navigation mazes, Morris water mazes), computerized microscope for stereological neuroanatomical studies, and computerized image analysis systems for quantitative autoradiography and densitometric analysis of western blots. Multi-user equipment such as centrifuges, Analox blood ethanol analyzer, gel electrophoresis units, hybridization ovens, deep freezers, spectrophotometers, and scintillation counters are owned by the area or available through cooperative agreements with other departments on campus.

All psychology faculty have personal and research computers with high speed access to the internet.  All campus, including lab space, is wifi enabled.  Other computers and large printers are available in the school.
